Free web hosting is often all you need to host your blog or website. Free hosts are great for blogs, personal webpages, clubs and small non commercial sites. Even some profesional webmasters use free web hosting to help reduce their overheads when hosting multiple websites. However free hosting often limits what you can and can't run in the way of scripts etc.
Free hosting is certainly NOT a recommended hosting type for big websites that receive high web traffic.
Many free webhosts will give you a sub directory for your site. For example, your websites address may look like - example.com/~yoursite/ or another option, provided by some free web hosting services - yourname.example.com which has your own sub-domain name. A few free web hosts will even host your own domain name if you have one. In order to pay their bills, most free web hosting services require that you show their advertising on your site. These ads may include banners and/or popup advertising.
Free web hosting is limited in a number of ways. Most free hosts do not allow scripting and instuctions such as server side scripting like CGI, php. ASP or perl. Also the amount of storage space and data transer (bandwidth) allowed is normally very limited.
